Cognitive interweaves
When processing loops, blocks, or won't move — a prompt to get things going again.
- “Whose responsibility was that?”
- “You were a child then — could you have stopped it?”
- “Who should have kept you safe?”
- “Are you safe now, in this room?”
- “Where is that person / that danger now?”
- “That was then — what’s true today?”
- “What choices do you have now that you didn’t have then?”
- “What would you do differently today?”
- “What does that younger part of you need to hear?”
More techniques when stuck
- Socratic: “What’s the worst part of that?”
- “I’m confused…” — invite them to explain it to you.
- New information / brief psychoeducation.
- Bring in a figure — nurturing, protective, or wise.
- Sort then vs now: “How old do you feel? How old are you really?”
- “Imagine…” — rehearse a different response.
- Use a metaphor or analogy.
- Return to target / check the body.
